Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations
· Follow all laboratory work instructions, methods, and industry standards to ensure consistent and reliable testing.
· Complete daily and weekly laboratory checks (e.g., balance checks, water changes, safety stops, hardness checks, face velocity checks).
· Support the calibration of laboratory equipment and instrumentation, ensuring records are maintained and any issues are escalated appropriately.
· Maintain high standards of housekeeping in line with 5S and GMP expectations.

Quality Control & Testing
· Carry out QC testing on raw materials (e.g., base rubber, additives) following approved procedures and schedules.
· Assist with testing of manufactured products to ensure they meet required specifications.
· Record all test results accurately and report any anomalies or concerns to supervision promptly.

Collaboration & Communication
· Work closely with supervisors and Operational teams to ensure testing activities support production needs.
· Liaise with the R&D & Innovations Manager to assist with development and project work when required.
· Provide cover for the Laboratory Assistant (within competency and training) to support continuity of testing activities.
· Contribute to continuous improvement by raising suggestions regarding materials, equipment, or processes.

Administration & Reporting
· Ensure laboratory records, databases, and documentation are accurate and up to date.
· Compile reports that include ‘user friendly’ (i.e. not too technical) conclusions and recommendations to communicate and solve product, quality and operational problems.
· Support all Laboratory functions, internal and external customers to meet the demands of the business: investigation processes, complaints, enquiries etc.

Functional Duties:
Health, Safety & Compliance
· Follow all company and industry requirements and standards relating to Health and Safety, COSHH, manual handling, Legionella and risk assessments to ensure safe working practices.
· Maintain awareness of relevant environmental and safety regulations to ensure safe working practices.
· Maintain housekeeping standards to support Laboratory and industry standards (ie 5S).

Training & Development
· Complete all required training as part of the apprenticeship programme and to meet the needs of the Laboratory and wider business.
· Take responsibility for developing skills, knowledge, and confidence in laboratory practices.
Monday – Thursday – 8.30 - 17.00, Friday – 8.30 - 14.00

Essential
• Ability to follow written instructions, procedures, and work methods
• Good attention to detail and accuracy in recording data
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks
• Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
• Ability to work both independently (once trained) and as part of a team
• Problem-solving mindset with willingness to ask questions and seek guidance
• Manual dexterity and ability to handle laboratory equipment safely

Desirable
• Ability to interpret basic test results or identify anomalies
• Experience using laboratory equipment (balances, ovens, hardness testers, etc.)
• Confidence in producing simple reports or summaries

Knowledge & Understanding
Essential
· Basic understanding of scientific principles and laboratory work
· Awareness of safe working practices
· Understanding of the importance of accuracy, precision, and data integrity
· Basic IT literacy (Microsoft Office or equivalent)

Desirable
· Awareness of COSHH, risk assessments, or laboratory safety rules
· Understanding of quality control or manufacturing environments
· Familiarity with calibration or measurement concepts

Experience
Essential
· No formal laboratory experience required — full training provided
· Some experience in a structured environment (school, part-time job, volunteering) demonstrating reliability and responsibility

Desirable
· Any previous exposure to laboratory, manufacturing, or technical environments
· Experience working with chemicals, materials, or measurement equipment (even in education)

Essential
· GCSEs (or equivalent) - (Grade 6/B or above) in: English, Maths, and Science (preferably Chemistry)

Desirable
· A-Level or BTEC in a science subject
· Any prior laboratory-related coursework or practical experience (school, college, or work experience)
